A varicose vein is a broken vein that has refluxing or stagnant contents. Normal veins return blood to the heart after arteries have carried it away. Veins use valves to direct their blood flow. If valves fail then blood accumulates under pressure, engorging and distorting these blood vessels. Varicose veins can appear as either bulging, often twisted and rope-like, or small and thread-like. Although these veins will sometimes only be of cosmetic concern, they often cause symptoms that can be severe enough that they can affect someone’s ability to get through their day. Technically speaking, spider veins, or telangiectasias, are too small to be called varicose veins. Still, like varicose veins, these thin, thread-like veins are enlarged and non-functioning. Their red, blue, or purple appearance comes from the fact that they lie very close to the surface of the skin. |
